"FREE TO THE PEOPLE"

2001: I was a beginner Internet user, and a beginner at coding JavaScript, mostly on the shared computer at a public library in Pittsburgh.

Computers and time on them was very limited, so I did a lot of coding on paper then (and I still do). But JavaScript was accessible and flexible enough that even 30 minutes on a shared computer was an adventure! I loved the accessibility of web-based code (and I still do).

Behind the library was also an art museum.
Near the enterance,
visible from the courtyard,
was a large painting:

Decades later, in 2019, my first p5.js sketch used this text:

Text as images & text as code:
...computation came before computers
...programming came before coding with text

or through choreography,
or through drawing,
or through performance
